Seas the Day: The Sailing Movie surprised me. I thought it would just be a sailing documentary, but it turned out to be a heartfelt story about a family learning and growing as they travel across sixteen countries. Even as someone new to documentaries, I found the mix of real adventure and myth-like storytelling really engaging.
