The Last Slide Projector
Overview
Completed in 2006, The Last Slide Projector examines the story of Eastman Kodak’s Carousel projector on the eve of its final production run and contemplates the social consequences of technological change and obsolescence. Shot on 16mm and digital video, this film is a cinematic example of what George Marcus calls “following the thing,” a method of tracking an object as it crosses temporal, spatial, and disciplinary boundaries. In this case, chronicling the history of this projection technology allowed me to investigate the aesthetic, ideological, and economic implications associated with the transition from analog to digital. The film premiered at the Rotterdam International Film Festival in 2007.
