Danny Rolling and the Gainesville Ripper
In August 1990, five University of Florida students were murdered in Gainesville over four days. Danny Rolling was arrested, confessed in 1994, and was executed in 2006. Screenwriter Kevin Williamson has said in interviews that a news report on the Gainesville murders, watched while alone in a house, was the spark for the Scream screenplay.
What Scream kept and changed
The film keeps the atmosphere — young people in a college town, killer in a mask, a community in panic — but invents the meta horror-movie framework. There is no real-world Ghostface, no phone-call taunts on record from Rolling, and no copycat pair.
