The confirmed attacks
The Zodiac Killer is linked to five confirmed murders in Northern California between December 1968 and October 1969, though he claimed 37 in his letters. The film accurately covers the Lake Berryessa attack, the Presidio Heights cab murder of Paul Stine, and the taunting letters sent to the San Francisco Chronicle.
The ciphers
The 340-character cipher shown unsolved in the film was actually cracked in December 2020 by a team led by David Oranchak. It contained a taunt but no name. The Z13 and Z32 ciphers remain unsolved.
Arthur Leigh Allen
The film's prime suspect, Arthur Leigh Allen, was never charged. DNA evidence recovered from Zodiac letter stamps has been reported as inconsistent with Allen, though the SFPD has never officially cleared him. The case remains open.
